The Black Keys

Blues/Alternative rock geniuses The Black Keys are slowly starting to tear up the music scene with their psychedelic rock. Their newest album produced by grammy award winner Danger Mouse, is one of the most amazing albums I've heard in a while.
The Duo Dan Auerbach, and Patrick Carney who make up The Black Keys have been playing together since high school, and it shows. Every song sort of melts together to create some erie, melodic masterpiece.
Before their newest album the band used to record themselves in the most obscure places you can think of. Unfinished basements, abandoned rubber factories, and haunted houses seem to be their favorite places. They commented on this say that making the low-fi records enabled them to mask the sound, but with the new album "attack&release" the sound is such a high quality and full, and yet amazing. Dans vocals are smooth and soulful like a lot of blues singers, but rocks none the less. The song "Strange Times" from the new album is slow flowing yet rocks hard at times. The new album is by far my favorite of the duo, and I can't wait for what comes next with this awesome band.
So Check em out....NOW!

TV on the Radio

Indie Rocks most unique group could quite possibly TV on the Radio. You could almost label their genre as art rock, but this still doesn't even come close to describing the sounds that these guys make. This group mixes so many styles that shouldn't even belong together. Fusing rock with doowop with African tribal music couldn't possibly seem like a good idea but these guys pull it off seamlessly.
TVOTR started their career in the rough music city of Brooklyn, Ny. Then their career took off when they were signed to Interscope Records who has signed some of my favorite artists like the Hives, Brand New, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and the Queens of the Stone Age. With this huge label behid them, TVOTR was bound to take off.
Their newest album "Return to Cookie Mountain" was released early 2007 with an overwhelming amount of publicity. This album was rated as one of the top 50 albums of the year by many music magazines all across the world. This album has a ton of hits and some of my favorite songs of all time. The song "Providence" opens with an entrancing melody that could actually get stuck in your head for the rest of your life. The song "Wolf Like Me" has a solid guitar rift that keeps you entertained for the entirety of the almost six minute song.
I Highly recommend TV On the Radio. So go check them out.

Hymns

Steeped in old country/rock, Hymns has created a new sound of their own. These guys have taken Neil Young's sound and tweaked it so far out to appeal to any body. Their first full length album Brother/Sister is one amazing album that has a feel of the Lonely Hearts with a more country twist. The song "It's a shame" is the tune to listen to on this album. It's more rock on their part, but Brian Hardings vocals fight through the dirt to make it a really beautiful smooth song. I haven't heard much of Hymns new album "Travel Herds" but of the song "I Can't be What You Want" is an amazing eclectic songs with so many instruments. There are saxophones, banjo, and trumpets, which makes for an interesting song. Overall they are one amazing band. Check em out as soon as you can.

Bright Eyes

Where do I begin with Bright Eye's?
Conner Oberst is the front man, and acclaimed "rock boy genius" by the music press. This is one amazing song writer. His most recent album "Cassadaga" is the his cleanest album yet. Almost every song has licks that slip off the track and get stuck in your head for days. This album is probably the most produced with dozens of instruments compiled on each track. His live shows have reflected his sophistication in music as well. He has just recently played with the Los Angeles Philharmonics. Which had to have been an amazing show.
Conner Oberst is known most for his lyrics. He has been compared to Bob Dylan, who is probably the greatest lyricist of our time. Bright Eyes has some songs that our very political, while others our just reflections on life in general. Overall the song writing is incredible.
His past albums "fevers and Mirrors," and "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning" are probably my favorite albums from Bright Eyes. If you want to listen to some of the best song writing of our time definitely check out Bright Eyes as soon as you can!

Ryan Adams

Ryan Adams can be described as a barrier breaker in the music world. Every album is a new experience and genre to be experienced. His latest album titled "Easy Tiger" is one amazing eclectic album. With almost ballad sounding tunes to country jams, this album takes from his old albums and creates a new sound. The song "Off Broadway" is probably my personal favorite, reminding me of "New York, New York" from the "Gold" album.
Ryan Adams also tours with his band The Cardinals, and fronts the country band Whiskeytown. It almost depends on the mood he's in at the time. He is almost like a bipolar musician, but an amazing one at that. Out of all the albums Ryan Adams has released "Rock & Roll" has been my personal favorite. This album is a little bit heavier than the other albums. It shows a more exciting side to Ryan Adams. The song "So Alive" is one of my all time favorite songs, and was released on this album.
I have tried for years to get to seem him live, but tickets are hard to come by for his shows. the closest I've come was going to North Carolina but, tickets ended up being $75 apiece and I couldn't afford it. So if you ever get a chance definitely go check him out.

Ben Kweller

In todays music world it is hard to find an album you can throw in your cd player and listen to the entire disc with complete satisfaction. I have found such albums with an artist known as Ben Kweller. With his musical roots strewn through country and classic rock, his music combines many styles to create his own rendition of Americana music.
His albums "Sha Sha" and self-titled "Ben Kweller" are my personal favorites that he has put out. "Sha Sha" has tunes with a harder rock feel in "Wasted and Ready," to moving ballads in "In Other Words," which has some of the most excellent piano licks your ears have experienced.
His latest release "Ben Kweller," is littered with amazing songs like "Sundress," "Penny on a Train Track," and "Until I Die." This album can take you through a whirlwind of emotions, and has become my staple driving record. Each song keeps you wanting to delve in and hear the next tune.
I have been able to see Ben Kweller live twice and he puts on an excellent show. So if you ever get a chance go see him.
I would definitely go check out Ben Kweller as fast as you possible can, and get in on some of the best music you can get your ears on.

Young Love

What is sweeter than Young Love? Summertime, picnic lunches, and beaches come to mind for most. When I think of Young Love, intense dance/rock comes to mind. This 5-piece band based in New York City, is tearing up the music scene with hits like "Discotech" and "Close Your Eyes." Recently signed by Island Records, Young Love has shared the stage with huge acts like Hellogoodbye, and Say Anything during the Myspace music tour. The music instantly makes you want to get up and dance. Dan Keyes is the power driving force behind the musical entity known as Young Love. He was once a member of the band Recover, which had a lot of national buzz going for the group. They even landed a record deal, but Keyes decided he needed a change musically, and once he moved to NYC, Young Love was created. Members have changed over the years, but the lucid sound that is created by these guys is a sound to behold. Check them out, and get up and dance as your ears wrap around the intense boogie hooks.

VHS or BETA

What can be said about VHS or Beta? This Dance/Pop/Rock band from my hometown
of Louisville, Ky. has changed the rock world with
it's new brand of dance/rock. When they released their first full length album "Night on Fire," I was blown away with the continuous hooks that seamlessly melted off each track. The title track "Night on Fire" has to be one of the catchiest songs I've heard in along time, but the hook on the track "Alive" is one to be reckoned with. This song has an ambient feel, but builds throughout the entire song into a mind blowing masterpiece. The bands newest album, released this past August called "Bring on the Comets", is definitely leaning toward the dance area of their sound, but does not disappoint at all. VHS of BETA has matured their sound into a very complex array of sounds with the new record. The song "Can't believe a single word" gets catchier every time I hear it.
The melody seems like a classic pop song, with a new wave dance feel. The most defining song on the new album is the title track "Bring on the Comets." This song brings out so many emotions. It almost has a ballad feel, till it it bursts through with pulsing guitars into the bridge. I highly recommend VHS or BETA to anyone who enjoys good quality, fun music.

As Tall As Lions

As Tall As Lions is as smooth as a baby's bottom, musically speaking that is. Dan Nigro's voice is a very refreshing sound from other lead singers in the indie/ambient/ rock genre. ATAL is signed to East West/TCR records. This indie rock label has signed big artist such as AC/DC, Missy Elliot, and The Beloved. As Tall As Lions are as deserving to be on this label as much as any of these other bands. What sets them apart is Dan's voice, it has the tone of Brandon Boyd, which says a lot. The bands overall sound has the feel of Under the Influence of Giants. Their new album "Into the Flood," is one of those albums that you can listen to all the way through without a hint of boredom. Every song calms and excites the ears. I would definitely check these boys out before they to huge. Tell your friends that you heard them first.

The Redwalls

When I first heard The Redwalls I had to get on the internet and make sure that The Beatles were not a band anymore! This band hasn't only perfected the sound The Beatles were known for, but have transformed it into something totally new and amazing. With their first album "Universal Blues," they shook up the music world. The album that I view as their best so far would be "De Nova." The song "Thank You" featured on this album is one of my top ten favorite songs ever. They may have the sound of the Fab Four, but these guys have made a mark of their own. The Redwalls most recent album titled "The Redwalls" is a little bit more trendy with todays music. I little harder but just as awesome. I would definitely check these guys out if you've never heard the greatness of The Redwalls.

The Boy Least Likely To

The Boy Least Likely To is equivalent to a ray of sunshine. These extremely happy upbeat melodic tunes are some of the best driving jams I've heard in a long time. Reigning from the United Kingdom, Peter and Jof of the Boy Least Likely To, grew up together in the small town of buckinghamshire. Jof writes all the lyrics and sings, while Peter writes all the music and plays. Their first album, "Best Party Ever" was recorded on a sketchy 8-track recorder, and became one of the top 50 albums of the year when it was released. This is my favorite album so far from the Boy Least Likely To. It has such hit's as "My Tiger My Heart," "Be Gentle to Me," and "Faith." Definitely check out this band if your in the mood for some happy, driving tunes.

Desert Sessions

Desert Sessions has grown out of the mind of Joshua Homme from Queens of the Stone Age, and Eagles of Death Metal. The band is basically a group of musicians from other bands that get together to write and record songs over a short period of time. The last album was written and recorded in a matter of eight days! The quality of the music seems like they would have spent months writing it. One amazing thing about this ever changing band is the diversity of the albums, every song feels completely different. From ambient to acoustic jam tunes, these guys can throw out an amazing album. News is circulating of a new album in the works, which should not disappoint! Check em out!

Eagles of Death Metal

When I think of amazing boogie rock, the first band that comes to my mind is Eagles of Death Metal. This band straight out the deserts of California, these boys put a brand new feel to the rock scene. EODM was formed by front man Jesse Hughes, and Joshua Homme from the band Queens of the Stone Age. The band members change often, but the awesome rock keeps on thriving. Their first album "Peace, Love, and Death Metal" was filled with amazing boogie tunes. Jesse admits his main inspiration is from Stevie Wonder, and you can feel it in the songs. Their newest album "Death by Sexy" has to be one of my favorite albums to come out in a long time. Songs like "Boys Bad News", and Cherry Cola will keep you humming the entrancing melodies. My recommendation is to check these guys out immediately! This has to be one of the greatest bands that will grace your ears with their music. Keep a look out, these guys will be huge!

Moros Eros

When Moros Eros fist hit the sound waves, it was equivalent to a breath of fresh air. The in your face vocals, and pulsing melodies are nothing more than extraordinary considering their roots in Merietta, GA. Signed to Victory Records, Moros Eros is setting themselves apart from the big dogs that share the label. Popular artists like Taking Back Sunday, Silverstein, Hawthorne Heights, Atreyu, and Thursday, are going to have to look out for this up and coming band. Moros Eros most recent album entitled "Jealous Me Was Killed By Curiosity," blew my mind the first time I heard it. The only downfall to this band is the inability to place them genre wise, which to some, is a plus. In touring though, this has been a bad thing. Moros Eros has played with such artists as Red Jumpsuit Apparatis to The Blood Brothers. Just keep a look out for these guys, they will be on indie lovers lists of the greatest bands ever before you know it.
Check them out.

The Lonely Hearts

The Lonely Hearts blew up on the Nashville, Tn. music scene in early 2005 opening for bands like Superdrag, and Family Force 5. These guy's have seriously brought back a classic American rock & roll feel to the music scene. With a name like The Lonely Hearts it's hard to not make a connection to the famous band, The Beatles. It's also easy to find the connection in their music as well. The Lonely Hearts is led by Will, and Josiah Holland, who are amazing song writers. They have yet to be signed to any major labels, but their album "Paper Tapes" is setting sales records on various websites. The album has a very diverse blend of upbeat and slower songs. Overall an amazing album. Check them out at their myspace page.

This Is Luke

As Christian rock music goes, it's hard to find bands that set themselves apart and give you a sound of their own. This Is Luke redefined Christian Rock for me. Every song that I've heard from them has a different feel. They remind me a little of The Starting Line, and Edison Glass. But, Guitarist/Lead singer Kory Wheeler really pushes the songs with his vocals. I'm looking forward to checking them out at the Anchor on Feb 21st.
Be there!

This Is Luke.

Colour Revolt

Colour Revolt emerged from Oxford, Mississippi like a monster out of a swamp.
Their distinct sound is s surprise to many ears, but pleasant nonetheless.
Colour Revolt is often compared to Arcade Fire, or sometimes even Wilco,
but these guys bring their own brand of Indie Rock to the airwaves.
The band is different from most in that they have 3 guitarists. You may think
that that is overkill in the guitar department, but Colour Revolt is able to use
this to their advantage in creating complex, melodic guitar rifts that blow the mind.
Colour Revolt has just been signed to Fat Opossum Records, and is set to release
their first full length album entitled "Plunder, Beg, and Curse" on April 1st of this
year. You can get their self titled EP from their website though. So go check these
guys out. They will not disappoint.

The Mars Volta

This band isn't really new at all, but with the hype on the new album " The Bedlam in Goliath" I figure that they deserve a spot in my second blog. The story behind this album is said to be about a a ouija board, and a series of bad luck that followed. Omar Rodriguez, guitarist/composer is known for is insane, and strange guitar rifts has supposedly calmed down a bit, and tend to be a bit more melodic for this record, but still does not dissapoint. Cedric Bixler, lead singer/lyricist who has a high pitched voice anyway tends to go falsetto more on this album. The album release is on January 29, and should be amazing. If you want to check out some of the songs from the new album you can check it out here. The Mars Volta
